Yes, the time of birth is required: without it there is no ascendant, and that is one of the three pillars of the book. You will usually find the time on the birth announcement or in the municipal birth record.
Is this astrology or astronomy?
Both, each in its own place. The positions are astronomy: the real sky, calculated for date, time and place. The interpretation is astrological tradition, written as a story, for inspiration and enjoyment, not a prediction.
Can I see what it will look like first?
